Remembrance Day for Victims of Radiation Accidents and Disasters is observed annually on April 26, the anniversary of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. The day was established to honor the memory of people killed or injured in radiation accidents and disasters, such as the Chernobyl disaster, the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, and other incidents involving radioactive contamination.

The Chernobyl disaster was the worst nuclear power plant accident in human history. It occurred on April 26, 1986, when the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, located in Ukraine (then part of the USSR), exploded. The explosion and fire released a huge amount of radioactive substances into the atmosphere, which led to the radiation contamination of vast territories.

Remembrance Day for Victims of Radiation Accidents and Disasters aims to:
Respect the memory of the victims. This day provides an opportunity to honor the memory of people who died or were injured as a result of radiation disasters.
Raising awareness. Remembrance Day reminds us of the importance of nuclear safety and the need to prevent similar disasters in the future.
Recognizing the heroism of liquidators. Liquidators of the consequences of accidents, such as Chernobyl workers, firefighters and soldiers, showed courage by risking their lives to prevent further destruction.
